The background color of the display is set via menu item #041 (DISP COLOR). Note that the black text on some of the darker background colors (like black on blue) is hard to read on the radio as well as here. Thus, if you want a scheme that is readable thoughout the range of options, you are pretty much stuck with:

If you want to vary the color according to the current meter/signal level (on both transmit & receive), Mtr: 1 is very reasonable. This choice is very useful for monitoring transmission SWR, modulation, ALC, or power level.
If you only use the amateur HF bands, BAND: 1 may be acceptable (if you don't mind purple for the 60m band).
For ARTS operation, ARTS: 1 looks reasonable.
Otherwise, a fixed (FIX) color scheme.

FIX: 32 (white) is slightly brighter than FIX: 1 (white).
